All your donations were presented to
the Ugandan schools. Around 7 schools are now involved in the Kampala
area. 300 children were introduced to badminton on this visit. The
structure is in place for friendly matches to start later this year. I
hope a league will be formed next year. All the schools play outside which
if there is a breeze makes things very difficult. At one of the schools
the court area we shared with 2 cows and some chickens!!
I found an indoor facility a bit
like a YMCA where the friendly matches will be played later this year. The
lines need to be repainted but its all in place. Posts were a bit of a
problem but I got around that by using old car wheels which have a post
welded into the middle.
I have promised to return to Uganda
when they are ready to launch the league. They really need plastic lines,
like the ones sold by Davies Sports, and shuttles. I shall be sending more
equipment out to them around June. Any further donations are most welcome
(rackets, trainers etc)
I also coached the Ugandan team
including their No.1 player Edwin Ekiring just before they left to play in
the Mauritius Open. Edwin won the tournament but all his equipment was
stolen!!
